VALLEY DIGEST with Roscoe Barnes III: New rules, personnel, generator make the grade

Emergency generator installed at fire hall

MONT ALTO -- A long-awaited emergency generator has been installed at the fire hall of the Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Department, according to Borough Secretary Patricia Kocek.

"The borough had to provide a mass care center so that people had some place to go in an emergency," Kocek said. "We had to have the generator located there at the fire hall. It would be used in the event of an emergency, such as when wires are down."

The exact cost of the generator could not be determined by presstime. In 2008, an official for the fire department reported the cost as being around $45,000. During that time, Mont Alto Borough Council agreed to donate $15,000 toward its cost.

Other donations came from Guilford and Quincy townships, according to Kocek.

Councilman Tom Lowson said the cost may have changed, or gone up slightly because of some unexpected problems involved with the installation. Burning ordinance in the works in Warren

WARREN TOWNSHIP -- The Warren Township Board of Supervisors is working on a burning ordinance that could go into effect around Oct. 23, according to Supervisor John Ressler.

"So far, everyone seems to have complied with the previous burn ban," he said recently. "We want to thank the people for their cooperation."

To make sure that the township keeps the burning concerns in mind, large signs have been posted at Little Cove that remind everyone that outside burning

is not allowed until conditions have improved.

"No outside burning of any kind is allowed," Ressler said. "It's terrible. It's drier now than it was in the past. Conditions here are extreme."

Council approves new assistant manager

WAYNESBORO -- Mercersburg Borough Manager Jason Cohen has been officially accepted as the new assistant borough manager of Waynesboro.

Waynesboro Borough Council voted Thursday night to accept Cohen for the position. He will start working in the position Nov. 1, according to Waynesboro Mayor Richard Starliper.

Council President Craig Newcomer congratulated Cohen and wished him the best, Starliper said.

Cohen's hiring was approved by all of the council members with the exception of Councilman Jason Stains, who abstained from voting because he had applied for the job.

Progress reported on Roxbury Road line

SHIPPENSBURG -- The Borough Bulletin, a newsletter of the Borough of Shippensburg, reports that the Roxbury Road waterline replacement project is moving along.

"Phase 1 of the project, from North Fayette Street to Mongul Hill, is about complete, except for final milling and blacktop, which will be done in the Spring 2011," the newsletter reports. "Phase 2A, in Roxbury, is 60 percent complete, with a scheduled completion of Nov. 30, 2010. Phase 2B, from Mongul Hill to McClay's Mill Road, was awarded Sept. 14, 2010. Estimated start date is November 2010, with a completion of Summer 2011."

The newsletter also reports the borough authority is working to acquire land for a water storage tank on Timber Hill. It is believed that the acquisition "will allow for additional safety measures, in the event a failure occurs at a production facility," and improve water pressure on the west end of town, according to the newsletter.

Road closures slated for Oct. 6 on Pa. 316

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Drivers traveling along Pa. 316 in Washington Township will encounter a couple of temporary closures along the way on Oct. 6.

According to a detour update posted on the township website, Pa. 316, Wayne Highway Bridge over the East Branch of Antietam Creek will be closed at 6 p.m. Oct. 6. Lyons Road will also be temporarily closed at Pa. 316.

The construction is being done for the new bridge being built by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. PennDOT has been working on the bridge since the spring, according to Township Manager Mike Christopher.
