An overloaded portable generator is believed to have caused a house fire in Woodford that left one person dead Friday night.

The fire began in the rear of the frame house at 7072 Macedonia Road, and was electrical in nature, David Layman, Caroline Fire-Rescue chief said in a news release.

Layman said initial findings show the occupant was trying to power the residence with the generator before the fire.

No details about the victim had been released as of last night because relatives had not been notified.

The fire with a person trapped in the structure was reported at 9:42 p.m. Friday. Volunteer units from Upper Caroline, Bowling Green, Port Royal and Ladysmith responded.

The first unit arrived at the house five minutes later to find heavy fire and smoke coming from all sides of the single-family dwelling.

Additional units from Frog Level and Spotsylvania County also battled the blaze.

No firefighters were injured.

It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the fire under control, authorities said.

The residence did not have an operational smoke detector.

Why? Ask REC (posted by Bowty57 , Sep. 26, 2010 9:09 am) ?? Why a generator and no electric you ask, REC has no program in place to help those going through a rough time right now, They will let you defer or extend partial payments for a time and they do refer sometimes to outside assistance programs that have waiting lists or depleted funding. I personally know of people who have had accounts with them for over 10 years, ran into a rough spot and had their electric turned off. Non-Profit, better or worse? why (posted by 1958 , Sep. 26, 2010 8:07 am) ?? did they not have elec why have to use a generator
