US company wins €500,000 environmental prize for cheap solar-powered cooker and generatorBy The Associated Press (CP) – 1 day ago
AMSTERDAM — A U.S. company has won a €500,000 ($667,000) environmental prize for developing an extremely cheap solar-powered cooker and electricity generator.
One Earth Designs chief executive Scot Frank said Thursday his company will use the money from the Netherlands' Green Challenge to begin scale production of the €10 ($13) product in China, where it was developed and tested.
The umbrella-like design uses yak wool and a cheap Chinese insulation fabric with unusually high reflectivity to focus the sun's rays and generate about 11 watts of power. It weighs 6 kilograms (13 pounds) and is expected to last 12 years in the field.
It was designed by students from MIT, Harvard and Tsinghua universities.
The Green Challenge was founded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery in 2007.
